What Is Microsoft Defender for Business?
Microsoft Defender for Business is Microsoft’s endpoint security solution for smaller organisations that need more than basic malware protection on work devices. It is built to help companies detect threats earlier, reduce device exposure, and respond to attacks in a more organised way across modern work environments.
This article explains what Microsoft Defender for Business actually does, why it should not be confused with a traditional antivirus product, and how it fits into Microsoft 365 business licensing.
Does Microsoft 365 include Defender?
In Microsoft’s business licensing model, Microsoft 365 Business Premium includes Defender for Business. Microsoft Learn also states that Defender for Business is available as a standalone subscription for eligible organisations, including those using Microsoft 365 Business Basic or Microsoft 365 Business Standard.
That distinction is important because businesses often group too many products together under the Microsoft 365 name. A more accurate view is that Defender for Business is a distinct security product that is included in Business Premium and can also be purchased separately by organisations that stay on qualifying lower-tier productivity plans.
For many smaller organisations, that makes Business Premium easier to justify during a licence review. Instead of buying productivity tools first and then adding endpoint protection later, the company can cover both needs under one broader subscription when the security requirement is already clear.
At the same time, organisations on Business Basic or Business Standard are not locked out of stronger endpoint protection. They can still adopt Defender for Business separately if their productivity licensing stays lighter while their device risk increases.
